A while back I saw a climate crisis-focused library exhibit called “This is Not a Drill.” That is an excellent title for the real-life horror show unfolding at the moment.
This is not a fire drill. We are witnessing the systematic destruction of U.S. democratic institutions, many of which were already barely hanging on as it was, and complete disregard for people’s lives.
All forms of protest are important. The call to “do something” is completely justified. But what we don’t do is just as important as what we do. Oligarchy runs off money and attention. Be selective about how and where you spend yours. Do you really need to buy that thing? If you do, can you make it yourself or barter with someone you know? What group is backing that TV program or that movie? Is that entity supporting or exploiting vulnerable communities? Would a local or independent entertainment choice better serve your community/ies?
My own consumption and buying habits are not perfect, but they have changed significantly over time as a result of my asking myself those questions. And they’re about to change some more.
Say it loud: Diversity. Equity. Inclusion. FOREVER.
Be as woke as you want to be.
Remember Montgomery and Birmingham.
The oligarchy cannot contain us.
